Ideas for this coloring, story, and activity book germinated in conversations between three local Arboretum regulars. Since educating children is one of the most important ways to secure the future of both bees and native plants, a children’s story situated in the North Idaho Native Plant Arboretum grew out of these conversations and bloomed. 

After initial research, the three authors, Mary, Hannah, and Patty applied for the Lois Wythe Grant in 2022 and when they received it, got “busy as bees” composing the book. The story recounts Bombus Bee’s accidental visit to the Arboretum and follows Bombus’ exciting journey visiting many pollen-rich native plants. Although it was a thoroughly collaborative effort, Mary and Patty worked on the story and activities, and Hannah took on the challenging task of illustration. 

Completed just before the 2022 holidays, Busy Buzzy Bombus Bee made its debut at the KNPS Holiday Party where its engaging story and stunning illustrations were a big hit. Local booksellers and garden centers were eager to stock the book, and by Spring 2023, only a few copies of the original 300 remained. A second printing was ordered to restock the sellers.
